Paseo del Rey Church Family Talk
Our church family’s mission is to transform people into fully devoted followers of Jesus for God’s glory. That’s what God has called us to and that’s what we’re about.
Seven years ago, God gave us Derek Olson as our Associate Pastor, and God used Derek in some really great ways to help us transform people into more fully devoted followers of Jesus.
This past January, Derek and Amy heard and responded to God’s call for him to become Lead Pastor at Faith EFC in Dallas, Oregon. We’re very thankful to God for Derek and Amy and their family for these past seven years of living life together. We love them and miss them.
As Derek shared his transition with us, our leaders were already praying, asking God what He might have next for Paseo del Rey.
Since then, we’ve done a lot of thinking, analyzing, reading and praying. And we have come to believe that it is God’s plan for us not to hire a new Associate Pastor in the near future.
This may come as somewhat of a surprise to some. In fact, the day Derek announced he was departing, without any prompting we had people volunteer to be part of a search process for our next Associate Pastor, and many of you have naturally wondered or asked what our plans are since.
As Derek departed, we had a choice before us: to hire a new Associate Pastor, or to welcome this unique opportunity for many more of us to discover the joy of serving one another.
We see this as a great window for the body of Jesus to rise up. As Paul said,
“. . . to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” And, “excel in using your gifts for the common good,” and “. . . "the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” (I Corinthians 12-14)
Jesus is most glorified, His church strengthened, and you will be most satisfied, as we each exercise our spiritual gifts as followers of Jesus.
So as we’ve thought hard, and prayed, we think it best not to add a new Associate Pastor in this season. Likely sometime in the future we will. But we’re sensing this is a great opportunity from the Lord for us each to excel in using our spiritual gifts for the good of one another.
One part of our plan in response is realigning some of our leadership roles and responsibilities of our current great staff. Derek did a lot! In dialogue with our staff, we’re shifting some of our responsibilities and prioritizing those responsibilities. This means that some things might need to be addressed ahead of others.
But more than anything, today we’re asking each of you to consider how you can join us in that vision of partnering with God transforming people into fully devoted followers of Jesus. Below, we’re sharing some of the places you can join us in our mission, serving alongside others. There are many more opportunities as well. Please feel free to contact one of the persons listed below, or our church office for more information, 619.421.7733 or email@example.com.

How does someone new plug-in at Paseo? It starts when we genuinely greet and chat with them in a welcoming way. Our Connections Team is the place where you can help us connect with newcomers. Join the team and help us connect by greeting people as they arrive on campus, and when they are seated between services or are grabbing a nametag. If you like talking to people, this job is for you! If you’re made to lead and encourage, we also have places for you to facilitate our specific Connections ministries, like ushering, coffee carts and name-tagging. Interested?

We want folks to feel welcome at Paseo del Rey every Sunday, and to worship Him with the least distractions possible. Our House Manager is our Sunday morning “host,” operating behind the scenes to make sure all runs smoothly and that our worship center enhances worship, not distracts. The House Manager will coordinate the activities of the Connection Team (name tags, ushers, coffee cart, etc.) on Sunday mornings to create an environment where people find a welcome, comfortable place to belong and an atmosphere to meet with God. You would be part of a Sunday morning team from 8:30 a.m. – noon, serving about one month per quarter. E-mail Matt Boldt at firstname.lastname@example.org or John Dickinson at J.Dickinson@cox.net, or let us know on your 4 x 5 card.
Help make Paseo del Rey be an inviting place by being on our Usher Team! You’ll assist with taking offering, attendance, and before and after service, straightening up our worship center. Ushers serve for a month at a time, one month per quarter.
